International Studies Major<br />

The major in International Studies emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to global issues<br />

and geographical regions <strong>of</strong> the world, and encourages an appreciation <strong>of</strong> other cultures.<br />

Courses provide analytical, critical thinking, normative and linguistic development. Specialization<br />

in various areas are <strong>of</strong>fered. A residency requirement allows the student to study the<br />

anguage and culture <strong>of</strong> their choice.<br />

Degree<br />

A major in International Studies leads to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree.<br />

Careers<br />

A major in International Studies provides a basis for graduate study and a foundation for<br />

careers in foreign and government service, international business, international law, private<br />

and non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations involved in international issues, public health, the Peace Corps,<br />

consulting and teaching abroad.<br />

Requirements<br />

Students must complete 39 hours in the International Studies major including 6 hours in a<br />

foreign language.<br />

THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM<br />

Requirements for the International Studies Major are:<br />

POLS 250 Comparative Politics<br />

POLS 270 World Politics or POLS 299 Model United Nations<br />

SOCI 203 Principles <strong>of</strong> Sociology or ANTH 201 Introduction to Anthropology<br />

INTS 315 International Political Economy<br />

INTS 450 Projects in International Studies<br />

Language requirement:<br />

Six credit hours in a foreign language. For European languages, these six credit hours need to<br />

be at the 300 level or above. For East Asian languages, they need to be at the 200 level or<br />

above. This requirement may be fulfilled by taking courses at another <strong>University</strong> approved by<br />

<strong>Queens</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlotte</strong> or by the foreign residency. The language requirement may be<br />

satisfied by completing a concentration or a major in the language studied. No additional<br />

language course work beyond that would be necessary.<br />

Area study:<br />

Every student should select a track <strong>of</strong> study consistent with his/her language study and interests,<br />

and take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 credit hours selected from the course <strong>of</strong>ferings. Note that certain<br />

courses are required and some courses have prerequisites. Portions may be fulfilled by the<br />

foreign residency.<br />

Residency:<br />

A student majoring in International Studies fulfills a residency requirement in a location appropriate<br />

to the chosen area <strong>of</strong> concentration. This residency should consist <strong>of</strong> a summer or<br />

semester abroad as approved by the International Studies Advisory Committee (ISAC). The<br />

ISAC assists majors in planning for the residency and must approve all proposed residency<br />

programs. The ISAC will consult with the student during the residency and, in consultation with<br />

the Registrar, will determine the academic credit to be transferred or awarded for the residency<br />

when the student returns. <strong>Academic</strong> credit earned in a foreign residency program may be used<br />

to satisfy other requirements in the major.
