ART<br />
ART 101 Introduction to Art<br />
Designed for the student with little or no art experience who wishes to gain understanding <strong>of</strong><br />
the language <strong>of</strong> art (composition, line, space, color, etc.) and art's significance in human terms.<br />
Involves slide presentations and classroom discussions <strong>of</strong> art works within an historical context.<br />
Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 204 Drawing<br />
Emphasis on drawing through close observation <strong>of</strong> nature and as an expressive medium for<br />
communicating felt responses to subject matter. Exercises in contour, gesture, modeled form<br />
and light, using still life, landscape and the human figure. Media will include pencil, charcoal<br />
and ink. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
UNDERGRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />
ART 208 Graphic Design I<br />
In this class students are introduced to the basic principles <strong>of</strong> graphic design and e-design as<br />
they relate to designing in general as well as for the internet and multimedia. Applications such<br />
as Photoshop and Illustrator will be explored. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 215 Ancient to Early Renaissance Art<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> stylistic developments and cultural contexts in architecture, sculpture, painting and<br />
the minor arts <strong>of</strong> the Mediterranean and European countries from prehistoric times to approximately<br />
1500 CE. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 216 High Renaissance Art to the Present<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> stylistic developments and cultural contexts in architecture, sculpture, painting and<br />
the minor arts <strong>of</strong> Europe and America from approximately 1500 CE to the present day. Spring<br />
Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 223 Ceramics<br />
Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> both hand building and throwing on the potter's wheel. Hand-building techniques<br />
will include pinch, coil and slab construction. Glaze instructions will stress the relationships<br />
between form and color. Fall/Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 226 Digital Photography<br />
This course introduces digital photographic equipment, theory and processes. Students will be<br />
instructed in camera operation, composition, computer photo manipulation and creative expression.<br />
Students will also learn the concepts and processes <strong>of</strong> photo manipulation through complex<br />
composite images, special effects, color balancing and image/text integration. Fall/Spring<br />
Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 227 Photography I<br />
Photography used as an expressive medium and as a tool for exploring visual experience. Emphasis<br />
will be on selection and treatment <strong>of</strong> subject matter. Students will learn necessary skills<br />
in photographic technique and be acquainted with the historical development <strong>of</strong> photography.<br />
Fall/Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
ART 235 Two-Dimensional Design Lab<br />
This course introduces the elements <strong>of</strong> art and principles <strong>of</strong> design as they apply to two-dimensional<br />
art. Emphasis is placed on the application <strong>of</strong> structural elements and the application <strong>of</strong><br />
the principles <strong>of</strong> visual organization and the theories <strong>of</strong> color. Upon completion, students will be<br />
able to apply the theoretical and analytical applications <strong>of</strong> two-dimensional design in their advanced<br />
studio art classes. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.
