UNDERGRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

RELG 350 Directed Readings<br />

Faculty-supervised study <strong>of</strong> an approved topic in religion through selected readings. To be<br />

evaluated through a weekly meeting with the instructor and a comprehensive paper. Open to<br />

majors in the junior or senior year, with permission <strong>of</strong> the department. As needed. 1-3 Hrs.<br />

RELG 351 Studies in World Religion<br />

The specific topic <strong>of</strong> this course will change, but it will usually focus on one <strong>of</strong> the world's major<br />

religions, like Islam, Hinduism, or a comparison <strong>of</strong> several world religions in courses like “Jesus<br />

and Buddha.” Prerequisite: RELG 210. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 12 Hrs. 3 Hrs.<br />

RELG 352 Studies in Sacred Scripture<br />

The specific topic <strong>of</strong> this course will change, but it will focus on an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> a sacred<br />

scripture. An example might be a course in "Pauline Letters" or a study <strong>of</strong> the Qu'ran or the<br />

Bagavagit. Prerequisite: RELG 205, or RELG 206, or RELG 210. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 12<br />

Hrs. 3 Hrs.<br />

RELG 353 Studies in Religion Culture and Ethics<br />

The specific topic <strong>of</strong> this course will change, but it will focus on an in depth study <strong>of</strong> a sacred<br />

scripture. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 12 Hrs. 3 Hrs.<br />

RELG 400 Major Thinkers and Issues<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> major figures in the field, and their views and impacts on current issues in the<br />

field. Topics will vary. May be repeated four times with different topics. Open to junior and senior<br />

majors, and others by permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor and chair. For Hayworth students, this<br />

course fulfills the writing-intensive course requirement. Spring Term, every year. Repeatable for<br />

a total <strong>of</strong> 12 Hrs. 3 Hrs.<br />

SOCIOLOGY<br />

SOCI 203 Principles <strong>of</strong> Sociology<br />

Basic concepts and principles <strong>of</strong> Sociology; relationships and meaning <strong>of</strong> culture, society,<br />

personality and interaction; analysis <strong>of</strong> group structure and social organization. Fall Term, every<br />

year. 3 Hrs.<br />

SOCI 250 Social Issues and Problems<br />

A sociological consideration <strong>of</strong> critical issues in contemporary society relating to individual deviation,<br />

social disorganization and social change; emphasis on causal factors, societal response<br />

and proposed solutions. Spring Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />

SOCI 303 Social Psychology<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the behavior <strong>of</strong> the individual in society, including attitude formation and measurement,<br />

interpersonal perceptions and behavior <strong>of</strong> the individual in groups. Prerequisite: PSYC 201.<br />

Students may elect this course as PSYC 303. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

SOCI 304 Marriage and The Family<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the family as a social institution; types <strong>of</strong> family life; changing familial roles in contemporary<br />

society. Prerequisite: upperclass standing or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. Fall Term,<br />

even years. 3 Hrs.<br />

SOCI 316 Women in Society<br />

An analysis <strong>of</strong> the female in regard to sex-role stereotyping through an examination <strong>of</strong> the status<br />

<strong>of</strong> women, cross-cultural role differences and the dynamics <strong>of</strong> socialization. Spring Term, every<br />

year. 3 Hrs.
