EDUCATION<br />
EDUC 501 Human Learning and Cognition<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to critically investigate learning principles and theories and apply<br />
them to contemporary educational situations. Students will actively engage in contemporary<br />
research on topics pertaining to the learning process, motivation, individual and group differences,<br />
memory and higher-cognitive functioning. Students will learn the use <strong>of</strong> multicultural<br />
explorations in subject matter, individual differences in teaching styles, assessment practices<br />
and study and learning strategies for EOG testing and reflection on teaching strategies.<br />
Research, Reflective Writing, Case Studies. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 502 Child Development<br />
This course is a study <strong>of</strong> contemporary human growth and development from conception<br />
through adolescence, with a focus on the elementary-aged child. Students will participate in<br />
class discussion, evaluate and assess developmental research methodology and apply various<br />
teaching strategies to promote child development in the following domains: cognitive, affective,<br />
social, physical, linguistic, personal and moral development. Students will demonstrate their<br />
abilities to foster student development through a final research project that will incorporate all<br />
<strong>of</strong> the topics listed above. Students will explore current trends and issues in diversity, group<br />
and individual differences, and use technology to enhance and support children's development.<br />

EDUC 503 Educational Research and Evaluation<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to teach students how to investigate and analyze various educational<br />
research findings. Students will then apply this new knowledge by synthesizing their findings<br />
and creating a research proposal within a real world setting. Students will be required to<br />
critically analyze research designs, explore and assess various research methods, comprehend<br />
basic statistical procedures, and interpret the data <strong>of</strong> current educational research findings. Additional<br />
topics include reflective examination <strong>of</strong> current school learning and teaching practices;<br />
assessment strategies in contemporary classrooms; identifying support for research in elementary<br />
school settings; and examining content pedagogy. Research, Reflective Writing, Case<br />
Studies. Phase II Course. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 510 Educational Psychology<br />
Study <strong>of</strong> those principles and theories <strong>of</strong> Psychology that have direct application to the classroom.<br />
Emphasis will be on development, learning, motivation, classroom management, and<br />
assessment. Students will participate in six field placements in which they will observe contemporary<br />
research in authentic classroom situations. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 513 Methods and Materials in Elem Educ<br />
This course emphasizes conceptual understanding <strong>of</strong> mathematical concepts in the child-centered<br />
classroom. Students learn developmentally appropriate strategies for diverse populations.<br />
Topics include National Council Standards and NC Standard Course <strong>of</strong> Study, lesson plans,<br />
reasoning skills, cooperative learning, problem solving, multiple assessment techniques, error<br />
pattern analysis, the use <strong>of</strong> technology and curriculum integration. Strategies <strong>of</strong> NC End <strong>of</strong><br />
Grade Tests. Field experience and reflective journal required. Phase I Course. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 514 Educational Technology<br />
This course provides instruction in advanced competency skills and the infusion <strong>of</strong> technology<br />
in the curriculum. The focus <strong>of</strong> the course is on the use <strong>of</strong> technology to support learning and<br />
assessment strategies for diverse populations, ethical and legal issues, electronic communication,<br />
the Internet as a research tool, evaluation <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware and Web sites and the use <strong>of</strong> technology<br />
to increase teacher's productivity. Strategies <strong>of</strong> NC End <strong>of</strong> Grade Tests. Field<br />
experience, reflective journal technology journal required. Phase I Course. 3 Hrs.
