UNDERGRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />
SPAN 230 Intermediate Spanish Reading/Conversation<br />
Review and more advanced study <strong>of</strong> the language with the goal <strong>of</strong> preparing students for the<br />
demanding setting <strong>of</strong> upper level classes. Through the use <strong>of</strong> literature, history and culture <strong>of</strong><br />
the 21 countries where Spanish is spoken, students increase reading comprehension, expand<br />
vocabulary, improve both oral and written linguistic expression, increase aural comprehension<br />
and review grammatical structures. SPAN 220 <strong>of</strong>fered each Fall term; SPAN 230 <strong>of</strong>fered each<br />
Spring term, Every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 310 Advanced Grammar/Translation<br />
A thorough review and expansion <strong>of</strong> Spanish grammar with emphasis on translation. Prerequisite:<br />
SPAN 220 or 230 or permission <strong>of</strong> the department. Spring Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 320 Advanced Composition<br />
Application <strong>of</strong> the principles <strong>of</strong> Spanish grammar through writing to increase fluency. This<br />
course fulfills the writing intensive course requirement. Fall Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 330 Reading for Comprehension and Vocabulary<br />
Development <strong>of</strong> reading skills through the study <strong>of</strong> various journalistic, historical and literary<br />
texts in order to increase vocabulary and enhance comprehension. Fall Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 340 Advanced Conversation<br />
Advanced oral training, through discussions, debates and presentations with stress on pronunciation,<br />
intonation and correct modes <strong>of</strong> expression. Spring Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 349 Commercial Spanish<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> the structure and style <strong>of</strong> Spanish business letters, routine messages and communication.<br />
Emphasis on commercial, banking and telecommunication terminology. Fall Term, even<br />
years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 350 Hispanic Literature<br />
The study <strong>of</strong> major literary works with the goal <strong>of</strong> understanding some <strong>of</strong> the important cultural,<br />
socioeconomic and political ideas that have shaped the societies <strong>of</strong> Spanish countries.<br />
Fall Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 360 Issues <strong>of</strong> Hispanic Life<br />
The study <strong>of</strong> cultural, socioeconomic and political issues facing Hispanic cultures as well as the<br />
historical trends which have shaped present-day society. Spring Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 370 Topics in Spanish Studies<br />
Course designed to address a specific topic or area <strong>of</strong> Spanish/Latin American Studies. Topic<br />
will be announced the semester preceding the <strong>of</strong>fering. As needed. May be repeated with<br />
different topics. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 Hrs. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 372 Elementary Translating<br />
Comparative analysis <strong>of</strong> translated texts; questions <strong>of</strong> restructuring texts and adding or<br />
subtracting material; style/audience relationship; simple translations from source language to<br />
English; sight translation. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />
SPAN 374 Advanced Translating<br />
Study <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional journals in the field <strong>of</strong> translation; specific problems <strong>of</strong> source/target language<br />
equivalents; expansion <strong>of</strong> working dictionaries; oral reports on work in progress; translating<br />
<strong>of</strong> substantial text(s) in field <strong>of</strong> specialization. Texts may be scientific, technical, commercial,<br />
scholarly or literary, depending on field <strong>of</strong> specialization. As needed. 3 Hrs.
