MUSC 031 Concert Attendance<br />

Sophomores are required to attend six recitals or concerts on the <strong>Queens</strong> campus in the spring<br />

Seniors are required to attend six recitals or concerts on the <strong>Queens</strong> campus in the fall term.<br />

MUSC 041 Concert Attendance<br />

Seniors are required to attend six recitals or concerts on the <strong>Queens</strong> campus in each <strong>of</strong> both<br />

MUSC 100 Introduction to Music<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the basic materials <strong>of</strong> music, survey <strong>of</strong> the important composers and examination <strong>of</strong><br />

selected masterpieces with reference to cultural background; technical knowledge <strong>of</strong> music not<br />

necessary for enrollment. Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUSC 103 Beginning Theory and Composition I<br />

Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> notation, tonality, scales and modes, interval and triadic structure. Elementary<br />

characteristics <strong>of</strong> melodic form. Four-part writing in a homophonic style using triadic structures.<br />

Analysis <strong>of</strong> chorale style involving triads, seventh chords, modulation, nonharmonic tones. Must<br />

be take concurrently with MUSC 103L. Fall Term. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUSC 103L Theory and Composition Lab<br />

This laboratory introduces students to the relationship <strong>of</strong> “sound to music notation” through the<br />

exploration <strong>of</strong> fundamental keyboard relationships. Pass/No record. Must be taken concurrently<br />

with MUSC 103. Fall Term. Pass/No Record 1 Hr.<br />

MUSC 104 Beginning Theory and Composition II<br />

Part writing in a homophonic style using triadic structures, seventh chords, nonharmonic tones,<br />

modulation, secondary chords and other chromatic harmonies. Prerequisite: MUSC 103.<br />

Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUSC 110 Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Music<br />

Basics <strong>of</strong> music theory: notation <strong>of</strong> pitch, rhythm, scales and harmony. Students will listen to<br />

music as they begin to distinguish the basic elements and will learn how to write and play some<br />

simple tunes on the keyboard. Class activities will include collaboration on a variety <strong>of</strong> instruments<br />

as theory is translated into sound. No previous musical experience required. Fall Term;<br />

Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUSC 113 SightSinging and EarTraining I<br />

Study and application <strong>of</strong> techniques <strong>of</strong> music reading and identification <strong>of</strong> sound. Students will<br />

begin to learn the Movable Do method <strong>of</strong> sight singing, and will work with ear training exercises<br />

for intervals, primary chord relationships, and rhythmic, melodic and harmonic dictation at an<br />

elementary level. Prerequisite: MUSC 103. Fall Term. Pass/No Record 1 Hr.<br />

MUSC 114 SightSinging and EarTraining II<br />

Continued acquisition <strong>of</strong> skills in sight-singing and ear training. Will include the addition <strong>of</strong> dominant<br />

seventh chords, primary triads in first inversion, rhythmic exercises involving unit, division,<br />

and subdivision and sight singing in major and minor keys with multiple sharp or flat signatures.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSC 113. Spring Term. Pass/No Record 1 Hr.
