UNDERGRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

MUTH 232 Sophomore Music Therapy Practicum IV<br />

Students continue to work with individual clients in the on-campus clinic while also working<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-campus with children in special elementary classrooms. Required <strong>of</strong> all sophomore music<br />

therapy majors. Spring Term, every year. Pass/Fail 1 Hr.<br />

MUTH 311 Music Therapy<br />

Methods/Materials:Adult Musical materials, methods and repertoire for adults will be emphasized.<br />

Students must learn a wide variety <strong>of</strong> songs from various decades which are appropriate<br />

for all adults, including geriatric clients. Prerequisite: MUTH 211 and completion <strong>of</strong> guitar is<br />

recommended. Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUTH 331 Junior Music Therapy Practicum V<br />

A continuation <strong>of</strong> on-campus clinic responsibilities while also working with older adults in an<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-campus setting. Students are expected to assume more responsibility and independence in<br />

working with clients in both settings. Fall Term, every year. Pass/Fail 1 Hr.<br />

MUTH 332 Junior Music Therapy Practicum VI<br />

A continuation <strong>of</strong> on-campus clinic responsibilities while also working with older adults in an<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-campus setting. Students are expected to assume more responsibility and independence<br />

in working with clients in both settings. Spring Term, every year. Pass/Fail 1 Hr.<br />

MUTH 343 Percussion Laboratory<br />

One weekly 75 minute session. Students will learn techniques <strong>of</strong> playing and teaching percussion<br />

instruments. Fall Term, every year. 1 Hr.<br />

MUTH 401 Psychology <strong>of</strong> Music I<br />

Music preference and ability are studied, along with physiological, cognitive and affective<br />

responses to music. Prerequisites: PSYC 201. To be taken in junior or senior year. Open to all<br />

students. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUTH 402 Psychology <strong>of</strong> Music II<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> observation systems and measurements as well as historical, philosophical, descriptive<br />

and experimental research related to music therapy. This course fulfills the writing-intensive<br />

requirement for the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music Degree in Music Therapy. Prerequisite: MUTH 401.<br />

Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUTH 409 Music in Therapy I<br />

Discussions <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional and ethical issues related to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession with special emphasis<br />

placed on the use <strong>of</strong> music therapy in medical and rehabilitative settings. Assessment, behavioral<br />

objectives, treatment plans, documentation and evaluation, as well as treatment modalities<br />

and interventions are examined. Must be taken concurrently with MUTH 431. Open to music<br />

therapy juniors and seniors. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUTH 410 Music in Therapy II<br />

Continuation <strong>of</strong> Music in Therapy I with special emphasis on new trends and holistic approaches<br />

in the pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Requirements include in depth presentations <strong>of</strong> major therapeutic<br />

approaches and comprehensive review <strong>of</strong> terminology used in all major areas <strong>of</strong> music therapy.<br />

Must be taken concurrently with MUTH 432. Prerequisite: MUTH 409. Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />

MUTH 431 Senior Music Therapy Practicum VII<br />

Seniors lead and co-lead music therapy sessions in a variety <strong>of</strong> medical and rehabilitative setings,<br />

including a general hospital, pain rehabilitation center, and with individuals in medical support<br />

groups. Must be taken concurrently with MUTH 409. Fall Term, every year. 2 Hrs.
