ENGL 210 British Literature to 1660<br />
Historical survey and critical exploration <strong>of</strong> the major periods, genres and attitudes <strong>of</strong> English<br />
Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period and the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. The<br />
works <strong>of</strong> Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton are highlighted. Primarily for sophomores; 210<br />
need not be taken before 220, but both should be taken early in the major as foundations for<br />
later courses. Prerequisite for all other British Literature courses in the traditional Undergraduate<br />
Program. Offered every year in the day, every other year in HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 220 British Literature 1660 to Present<br />
Historical survey <strong>of</strong> the major movements and periods <strong>of</strong> English literature from the Restoration<br />
and Neo-classicism through 19th-century Romanticism and Realism to the Modern period.<br />
ENGL 210 and 220 should be taken early in the major as foundations for later courses. This<br />
course, along with ENGL 210, serves as the prequisite for all other courses in British Literature<br />
in the traditional Undergraduate Program. Offered Spring Term, every year in the day, every<br />
other year HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 230 Survey <strong>of</strong> American Literature<br />
Historical survey <strong>of</strong> the major movements and writers in American literature from the colonial<br />
period to the mid-19th century. This course, along with English 240, serves as the prerequisite<br />
for all other courses in American literature in the traditional Undergraduate Program. Offered<br />
Fall Term, every other year in the day, every other year in HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 240 Survey <strong>of</strong> American Literature 1865 to Present<br />
Historical survey <strong>of</strong> the major movements and writers in American literature from the era <strong>of</strong> realism<br />
at the end <strong>of</strong> the 19th century to the present. This course, along with English 230, serves<br />
as the prerequisite for all other courses in American Literature in the traditional Undergraduate<br />
Program. Offered Spring Term, every year in the day, every other year in HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 300 World Literature<br />
Study <strong>of</strong> world literature from the ancient to the modern. Emphasis on authors, genres, periods<br />
or themes may vary. Prerequisite: ENGL 110 and 120 or the equivalent. Offered Spring Term,<br />
odd years in the day and every summer. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 303 Ancient Greece to Renaissance<br />
Survey <strong>of</strong> dramatic literature from ancient Greece to the Renaissance, with emphasis on the<br />
relationship <strong>of</strong> the plays to the physical circumstances <strong>of</strong> theatrical production and to the<br />
historical and cultural milieu <strong>of</strong> the periods. Students may elect this course as DRAM 303.<br />
Offered every year in the day (term may vary); not <strong>of</strong>fered in HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 304 Drama Renaissance to Modern<br />
Survey <strong>of</strong> dramatic literature from the Renaissance to the time <strong>of</strong> Ibsen, with emphasis on the<br />
relationship <strong>of</strong> the plays to the physical circumstances <strong>of</strong> theatrical production and to the<br />
historical and cultural milieu <strong>of</strong> the period. Students may elect this course as DRAM 304. Offered<br />
every year in the day (term may vary); not <strong>of</strong>fered in HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
ENGL 307 Advanced Composition<br />
An intensive study <strong>of</strong> the writing <strong>of</strong> creative nonfiction, focusing on advanced techniques <strong>of</strong><br />
prosody, exposition, descriptive detail and narrative voice. All instruction and discussion is<br />
revision-based. Prerequisites: English 110, 120, and either 207 or 306, or permission <strong>of</strong> the<br />
department. Offered every year in the day, every other year in HC. 3 Hrs.<br />
