OCOM 317 Gender in the Workplace<br />

This course examines the theories and applications <strong>of</strong> gender studies in the context <strong>of</strong> the<br />

working relationships between women and men. Areas to be studied include: basic gender<br />

theories; conversational rituals; nonverbals and status; “when she's the boss” - women and<br />

authority, directness in work delegation; communication in meetings; and mixed group vs. same<br />

sex group interaction. 3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 320 Organization Development<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> organization development with an emphasis on<br />

the principles <strong>of</strong> human behavior in change efforts. Specific topics include organizational diagnosis,<br />

process consultation and change management. Emerging issues in the field such as<br />

chaos theory are covered. 3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 322 Interpersonal Communication<br />

The study <strong>of</strong> communication as it affects the individuals interaction with other people in relationships.<br />

The course includes consideration <strong>of</strong> such concepts as self-concept analysis, perception,<br />

self-disclosure, gender roles in communication, nonverbal communication, listening<br />

behavior, dyadic interaction, interpersonal conflict and intercultural communication. 3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 327 Intercultural Communication<br />

The examination <strong>of</strong> the relationship between communication and culture. Students will explore<br />

the challenges <strong>of</strong> global business environments, international organizations, and conducting<br />

business in international settings. NOTE: This course satisfies the International Issues requirement.<br />

3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 330 Human Resource Development<br />

This course examines the role <strong>of</strong> strategic human resource management in coordinating and<br />

integrating strategic change across organizations. A dual emphasis is placed on both human<br />

resource management strategies such as staffing and retention and on human development<br />

issues which include adult learning and motivation. 3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 332 Conflict Management<br />

This course examines the nature <strong>of</strong> conflict and the impact that conflict has on our pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

lives. The focus <strong>of</strong> the course is on self-assessment and the effect that different styles <strong>of</strong><br />

conflict management have on the parties involved. Specific strategies for managing conflict,<br />

including verbal and nonverbal communication, active listening and negotiation are explored.<br />

3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 335 Persuasion<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> classical and contemporary approaches to the study <strong>of</strong> messages designed to influence<br />

others, to increase understanding <strong>of</strong> how we persuade, how we are persuaded, and why<br />

so many persuasive attempts fail. Students will analyze persuasive appeals in a variety <strong>of</strong> contexts,<br />

such as interpersonal relationships, employee communications, marketing, advertising,<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it appeals and political campaigns. 3 Hrs.<br />

OCOM 340 Training and Consultation<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to enable students to better understand the role <strong>of</strong> consultants<br />

in providing services for a pr<strong>of</strong>essional organization. The course examines various skill sets<br />

and strategies used for assessment, intervention and evaluation. The specific topics covered<br />

include management development, team building and organizational culture assessment. Each<br />

topic is approached from the perspectives <strong>of</strong> both the internal trainer and the external consultant.<br />
