BIOL 320 Zoology<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the various animal phyla from the protists through the vertebrates. Emphasis is<br />

on the phylogenetic history, evolutionary trends and the relationship between structure and<br />

function among animals. Three hours <strong>of</strong> lecture and three hours <strong>of</strong> laboratory each week. Lab<br />

BIOL 330 Field Studies in Biology<br />

Field studies in selected habitats or <strong>of</strong> particular groups <strong>of</strong> plants or animals. Prerequisite: Principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> Biology I. Fall Term Odd Years. 4 Hrs.<br />

BIOL 360 Biology Seminar<br />

An introduction to reading and researching scientific literature and research proposal writing.<br />

The course also addresses issues dealing with ethical conduct as a scientist. This course fulfills<br />

the writing intensive requirement. Spring term, Every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

BIOL 390 Biology Lab Assistant<br />

Practical experience as a laboratory assistant in the department. May be repeated once for<br />

credit. Grading is P/NR. Prerequisite: 12 hours <strong>of</strong> biology with a grade <strong>of</strong> B or better and<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the department. Fall Term, Spring Term, Every Year. Pass/No Record 0 Hrs.<br />

BIOL 391 Biology Lab Assistant<br />

BIOL 400 Cell Biology<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> cell structure and physiology. Laboratory emphasizes research methods, including instruments<br />

and techniques used in studying cells. Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory<br />

a week. Lab fees apply. Prerequisite: BIOL 209 and at least one year <strong>of</strong> college chemistry.<br />

BIOL 401 Comparative Physiology<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the function <strong>of</strong> vertebrate systems. Comparisons made to invertebrate systems where<br />

appropriate. Includes lecture and laboratory experimentation. Three hours lecture and three<br />

hours laboratory a week. Lab fees apply. Prerequisite: BIOL 209 and 320. Fall Term, Even<br />

Years. 4 Hrs.<br />

BIOL 402 Genetics<br />

Principles <strong>of</strong> heredity and variation in plants and animals. Three hours lecture and three hours<br />

laboratory a week. Lab fees apply. Prerequisite: BIOL 209. Fall Term, Every Year. 4 Hrs.<br />

BIOL 403 Developmental Biology<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> animals set within the framework <strong>of</strong> classical embryology and<br />

current molecular biology. Emphasis will be placed on the molecular events which govern the<br />

processes <strong>of</strong> fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, organogenesis and pattern formation. The<br />

laboratory will highlight experimental approaches to studying development. Lab fees apply.<br />

This course fulfills the writing-intensive course requirement. Three hours lecture and three<br />

hours laboratory per week. Prerequisites: BIOL 209. Spring Term, Odd Years. 4 Hrs.<br />

BIOL 450 Independent Study In Biology<br />

Research projects in the area <strong>of</strong> the student's interest; written report and/or oral examination<br />

may be required. Prerequisite: BIOL 208 and permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. Repeatable for a<br />

total <strong>of</strong> 6 Hrs. 1-4 Hrs.<br />
