EDUC 533 Science Methods/Materials/Elem/Ed<br />

This course emphasizes science attitudes and process skills, science concepts, and the<br />

integration <strong>of</strong> science across the curriculum. Students learn developmentally appropriate<br />

hands-on strategies for diverse populations. Topics include organizing for effective science<br />

teaching, safety, methods <strong>of</strong> inquiry, questioning techniques, using technology, diagnosing and<br />

correcting misconceptions and the role <strong>of</strong> science in every-day life. National Standards and NC<br />

Standard Course <strong>of</strong> Study are addressed. Field experience and reflective journal required.<br />

Phase I Course. 3 Hrs.<br />

EDUC 534 Educational Leadership<br />

This course examines trends in educational leadership in the United States. Leadership styles,<br />

including small learning communities and school recovery models will be analyzed. Students<br />

will work examine the issues associated with leading pr<strong>of</strong>essional educators in various levels <strong>of</strong><br />

school performance. An emphasis will be placed on schools viewed as low-performing and<br />

high-performing. Other ancillary areas including, tesing and assessment, data collection, human<br />

resources, curriculum and instruciton management, working with parents and team building will<br />

be integrated throughout the course. 3 Hrs.<br />

GRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

EDUC 535 Topics in School Administration<br />

This course examines current issues related to site-based school administration. Areas <strong>of</strong> focus<br />

may include exceptional children, discipline, staff development, human resources and communication<br />

skills. An emphasis will be placed on developing structures to support pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning<br />

communities. Additionally, appropriate articulation and dissemination <strong>of</strong> accurate information<br />

to all constituents will be emphasized. 3 Hrs.<br />

EDUC 536 School Law<br />

This course examines key legal issues as they apply to the building level administrator. Areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> focus may include: historical development <strong>of</strong> school law and its implication on school policy,<br />

managing human resources, students' rights, parental rights and legal obligations <strong>of</strong> school.<br />

Students will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions and perform site-based management<br />

based upon legal precedence. 3 Hrs.<br />

EDUC 540 Social Studies Methods and Mats/El/Ed<br />

Studies across the curriculum. Reflective writing, valuing a multicultural environment, National<br />

standards and NC Standard Course <strong>of</strong> Study will guide students learning. Cooperative learning,<br />

group process and inquiry models will be used in planning lessons. Multi-faceted assessment<br />

techniques will be practiced. Field experience and reflective journal required. Phase I<br />

Course. 3 Hrs.<br />

EDUC 546 Secondary Methods/Materials<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> teaching methods, resources, materials and strategies as related to general secondary<br />

school teaching and specific content area teaching. Prerequisite to student teaching; normally<br />

to be taken in fall term <strong>of</strong> senior year. A field experience is required. Fall Term, every year.<br />

3 Hrs.<br />

EDUC 547 Content Area Reading<br />

The importance <strong>of</strong> reading development in the content fields for the improvement <strong>of</strong> learning is<br />

emphasized. Topics include study skills; selection <strong>of</strong> appropriate reading materials, both functional<br />

and recreational; classroom strategies for facilitating reading comprehension; and vocabulary-building<br />

methodologies. Required for secondary teacher certification in all areas. Fall<br />

Term, every year. 3 Hrs.
