75 PHILOSOPHY and RELIGION DEPARTMENT The study of Philosophy and Religion is worthwhile both for the intrinsic value of inquiring into what is best in thought and living, and also for the practical value of the intellectual habits one gains. Literally meaning “love of wisdom,” philosophy is the inquiry into fundamental questions that humans ask: what is the good life? What is most real? How can humans know? What is sound reasoning? How do humans create and discover meaning in life? In keeping with Queens’ Presbyterian tradition, we recognize the importance of “thinking the faith.” The academic study of philosophy and religion together focus on the “turning of the soul” and how communities as well as other religious traditions understand that “turning” as it becomes a basis for a good life. Students of philosophy and religion significantly enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as their communication skills. The broad inquiry into patterns of thought strengthens problem-solving ability and helps the student attain a depth of thought that is invaluable for a wide variety of graduate studies and careers. Writing-intensive course requirement The writing-intensive course requirement is met with PHIL 400 or RELG 400. Majors The department offers a major in Philosophy-Religion. The department also offers a major in Religion only through the Hayworth College. Both majors lead to the Bachelor of Arts Degree. Requirements Students must complete 33 hours in the Philosophy-Religion major. Philosophy-Religion Major Requirements for the Philosophy – Religion major are: Core: PHIL 203 Introduction to Philosophy PHIL 204 Introductory Logic RELG 210 Introduction to World Religions RELG 205* The Old Testament or RELG 206* The New Testament PHIL 400 or RELG 400 Major Thinkers and Issues Plus 6 courses chosen from: (Some courses may have prerequisites or permission of the instructor may be necessary) PHIL 220 Introduction to Philosophy of Religion PHIL 304 Contemporary Western Philosophy PHIL 305 Medical Ethics PHIL 330 Ancient & Medieval Western Philosophy PHIL or HIST 334 Modern Political Thought PHIL 349 Topics in Philosophy PHIL 350 Directed Studies in Philosophy RELG 205 The Old Testament RELG 206 The New Testament RELG 306 Prophetic Religion RELG 312 or HIST 312 The First Christians RELG 323 Renaissance and Reformation or HIST 306 Early Modern Europe RELG 344 Christian Ethics RELG 345 or HIST 345 Religion in America THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
