HIST 391 Topics in World History<br />

Topics are announced annually. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />

HIST 392 American Women<br />

Derived from primary sources <strong>of</strong> women themselves, this study examines the central role <strong>of</strong><br />

women in U.S. history. The study focuses on the period 1830 to the present, with particular<br />

attention given to race, region and class. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

HIST 449 Directed Readings<br />

Independent investigation <strong>of</strong> a topic through a program <strong>of</strong> directed readings. There will be an<br />

interpretive paper and oral examination conducted by department members. Open to majors<br />

with a B average in history after departmental approval <strong>of</strong> the topic. Every term, every year.<br />

Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 Hrs. 1-3 Hrs.<br />

HIST 450 Independent Study<br />

Independent investigation <strong>of</strong> a topic through the writing <strong>of</strong> a research paper; oral examination<br />

conducted by department members. Open to majors with a B average in history after departmental<br />

approval <strong>of</strong> the topic or project. Every term, every year. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 Hrs.<br />

1-3 Hrs.<br />

HIST 495 Masterworks<br />

Masterworks is the History Department's "capstone" course and is required <strong>of</strong> all history majors.<br />

It is required <strong>of</strong> senior history majors who will complete their study <strong>of</strong> history by creating a<br />

serious work <strong>of</strong> historical scholarship. Each student will complete this work under the personal<br />

guidance <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Queens</strong> history faculty and present this work both to the faculty<br />

and to other history students. Prerequisite: senior history major standing, HIST 299 and<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the department. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

HONORS<br />

HONR 110 Freshman Honors Seminar<br />

HONR 110 is designed to introduce first year students to the Honors Program and Honorslevel<br />

work. In this course students will have an opportunity to sharpen analytical and research<br />

skills by investigating a variety <strong>of</strong> topics that have teased the human mind for centuries. HONR<br />

110 examines a wide ranging set <strong>of</strong> "history's mysteries" linked by their dependence on extraordinary<br />

claims. Topics may include the Bermuda Triangle, William Shakespeare, the Loch Ness<br />

Monster and the historicity <strong>of</strong> the Trojan War. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

HONR 210 Honors Seminar<br />

This course is an interdisciplinary seminar examining significant ideas and methods <strong>of</strong> inquiry in<br />

the Arts and Sciences. Honors seminars are frequently team-taught, and center on questions<br />

not directly addressed by other College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences courses. Specific topic varies<br />

from year to year. Topics are announced the term prior to the seminar's being taught. Material is<br />

suitable for sophomore students. Significant levels <strong>of</strong> reading and writing are required. Course<br />

may be retaken for credit if the course topic is different. Fall Term, Spring, every year.<br />

Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 9 Hrs. 3 Hrs.
