COMMUNICATION<br />
COMM 101 Introduction to Communication Studies<br />
This course surveys the processes <strong>of</strong> communication, and explores the way they work in such<br />
contexts as relationships, groups and organizations. The course includes such topics as perception<br />
and listening; the development, dissolution and maintenance <strong>of</strong> relationships; group decision-making;<br />
public persuasion; and mediated communication. Fall Term, Spring Terms. 3<br />

COMM 200 Public Speaking<br />
This course develops student ability to prepare and deliver an effective speech for a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
purposes. Topics include overcoming speech anxiety; composing appropriate beginnings and<br />
endings; choosing organizational patterns; and improving diction and body language. Fall Term,<br />
Spring Terms. 3 Hrs.<br />
COMM 204 Introduction News Writing/Editing<br />
This course examines newspaper methods and the techniques <strong>of</strong> news writing, emphasizing<br />
basic editing. This course fulfills the writing-intensive requirement. Prerequisites: COMM 101<br />
and ENGL 110 and 120. Fall Term, Spring Terms. 3 Hrs.<br />
COMM 207 Advanced Expository Writing<br />
This expository writing course designed to help students in all majors improve their writing<br />
skills. This course fulfills the writing-intensive requirement for communication majors. Prerequisite:<br />
English 120. Students may elect this course as ENGL 207. Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />
COMM 213 Practicum: <strong>Queens</strong> Chronicle<br />
Practical work in producing the student newspaper, The <strong>Queens</strong> Chronicle, The course features<br />
regular workshops with instructor and editors. Prerequisite: COMM 204. Fall Term,<br />
Spring Terms, every year. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 4 Hrs. 2 Hrs.<br />
COMM 231 History <strong>of</strong> Film<br />
Introduction and historical analysis <strong>of</strong> cinema from the silent era to the contemporary avant<br />
garde. The course surveys technological developments, the evolution <strong>of</strong> popular genres and the<br />
achievements <strong>of</strong> significant directors and their landmark films. Students may elect this course<br />
as DRAM 231. Fall Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />
COMM 233 Television History/Criticsm<br />
This course surveys television history, including broadcast milestones, the entertainment and<br />
educational potential and the imprint on American society. Students will examine American<br />
mass culture through the window <strong>of</strong> television programming, explore the economic dimensions<br />
<strong>of</strong> the medium and investigate new technologies. Students may elect this course as DRAM<br />
233. Fall Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />
COMM 302 Elements <strong>of</strong> Actuality: Audio, Video and Performance<br />
Beginning with classical rhetoric's emphasis on the ethos <strong>of</strong> a messenger (enacted in a<br />
reporter's performance), this course introduces and develops student abilities as storytellers<br />
across electronic media platforms. By studying the nature and contributions <strong>of</strong> the sound and<br />
image elements required to communicate actuality on radio, television, film and multimedia,<br />
students will find out how to tell an evocative story ethically. 3 Hrs.<br />
COMM 304 Advanced News Writing: Print<br />
Advanced study <strong>of</strong> the techniques <strong>of</strong> writing news, emphasizing the development <strong>of</strong> specialized<br />
skills and research techniques. Prerequisite: COMM 204. Spring Term. 3 Hrs.<br />
