ART 236 Three-Dimensional Design Lab<br />

This course introduces the elements <strong>of</strong> art and principles <strong>of</strong> design as they apply to three-dimensional<br />

art. Emphasis is placed on the application <strong>of</strong> principles as they relate to form and<br />

space. Upon completion, students will be able to apply the theoretical and analytical applications<br />

<strong>of</strong> three-dimensional design in their advanced studio art classes. Fall Term, every year.<br />

3 Hrs.<br />

ART 302 Painting<br />

Studies in basic structure and color with emphasis on pictorial elements interpreted through<br />

the media <strong>of</strong> painting. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

ART 303 Sculpture<br />

The exploration <strong>of</strong> basic elements <strong>of</strong> three-dimensional form and space with special emphasis<br />

on the exploration <strong>of</strong> various styles, materials and techniques. Spring Term, every other year.<br />

3 Hrs.<br />

ART 304 Printmaking<br />

Exploration <strong>of</strong> the basic principles <strong>of</strong> printmaking through such media as wood cuts, linoleum<br />

cuts or serigraphy. Pictorial composition, sound procedure and techniques are stressed in the<br />

program. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

ART 305 Advanced Studio<br />

This course permits advanced individual exploration <strong>of</strong> techniques and principles introduced in<br />

the 200 level studio courses. The focus varies from semester to semester between two- and<br />

three-dimensional approaches with occasional thematic topics such as the human figure, stilllife,<br />

collage/ montage/ assemblage, etc. Prerequisite: one studio course from ART 223, 302,<br />

303, 304, 365, 301 or 311. Fall/Spring Terms, every year. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 12 Hrs.<br />

ART 306 History <strong>of</strong> Design<br />

This course follows the quest to give form to ideas as traced from the pictographs painted on<br />

cave walls to the latest imaginative computer-generated designs. Students will be exposed to<br />

the creative thinkers, important innovations and breakthrough technologies that have shaped<br />

the evolution <strong>of</strong> visual communication. Fall Term, every other year. 3 Hrs.<br />

ART 308 19th Century Art: Rise <strong>of</strong> Modernism<br />

This course explores developments in the painting and sculpture <strong>of</strong> Europe and America from<br />

the late 18th century age <strong>of</strong> “political revolution” to the early 20th century age <strong>of</strong> “artistic revolution.”<br />

Artists like David, Gericault and Delacroix will be explored in the light <strong>of</strong> Enlightenment<br />

theories and revolutionary politics, followed by the socialist theories <strong>of</strong> the Realists Courbet and<br />

Daumier and concluding with the artistic innovations <strong>of</strong> Manet, Monet and Cezanne. Fall term,<br />

every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

ART 309 Ancient Art: The Birth <strong>of</strong> Art<br />

This course will examine ancient artistic traditions in the Near East, Egypt, Greece and Rome.<br />

Special emphasis will be placed on expressive contrasts between the cultures <strong>of</strong> the Near East<br />

and West. Spring Term, every other year. 3 Hrs.<br />

ART 313 Medieval and Renaissance Art<br />

The course will explore the development <strong>of</strong> Medieval and Renaissance art in Europe from the<br />

6th to the 16th centuries, exploring stylistic and cultural changes as revealed in sculpture,<br />

painting and architecture. Spring Term, every other year. 3 Hrs.<br />
