between god and the father is the site where politics is instituted. This could be one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the guiding questions for psychoanalysis: to conceptualise a space between god<br />

and the father, not only in terms <strong>of</strong> murder, <strong>of</strong> the symbolic, or the name, <strong>of</strong> the void,<br />

and so on - all these modalities being obviously relevant - but also, and more<br />

resolutely, in terms <strong>of</strong> the aridity in which the construction <strong>of</strong> politics takes place.<br />

The threat that haunts men in the desert is either the “There is nothing” <strong>of</strong> nihilism<br />

or the abundance <strong>of</strong> the totalitarian mirage (Benslama 2009: 216).<br />

Benslama shows there is the potential for psychoanalysis to develop further a co-relation <strong>of</strong><br />

psychoanalytic and Islamic insights focusing on the metaphor <strong>of</strong> space, here described as<br />

the desert.<br />
