Ethical Permission for a Qualitative Research Day led by Alistair Ross<br />

I give permission for Alistair Ross to:<br />

1. Record the qualitative methodology research day on March 28 th 2009. This<br />

recording will be transcribed and a copy available on request by application to<br />

Alistair Ross.<br />

2. Use individual participant’s research notes made in preparation for the day for<br />

further use in his PhD, dissemination to other research groups/conferences and<br />

potential future publications arising out <strong>of</strong> the research.<br />

Any specific comments/statements made during the day that I do not wish to be included in<br />

the transcription can be excluded. This requires notification to be made to Alistair Ross by<br />

April 5 th 2009.<br />

The participants came to the day having read the two texts supplied. The following<br />

questions were asked.<br />

What was your perception <strong>of</strong> the experience <strong>of</strong> AR?<br />

What was your perception <strong>of</strong> the experience <strong>of</strong> the psychoanalyst?<br />

What was your perception <strong>of</strong> the dynamics between them?<br />

What was your overall perception <strong>of</strong> the encounter?<br />

Here is a sample <strong>of</strong> participants’ responses on their perception <strong>of</strong> the dynamics and the<br />

encounters <strong>of</strong> two interview transcripts and AR’s responses to these.<br />

DM writes ‘I was struck by how much seems to be going on in an interview apart from the<br />

topic under discussion … the topic <strong>of</strong> the discussion cannot - it seems to me - come centrestage<br />

until common ground between the people involved is established - a sense <strong>of</strong> knowing<br />

who you are and who we are in this situation … The image that came to mind as I read were<br />

principally connected to dancing - people trying to find out who is taking the lead (at times<br />

conversation felt rather competitive - some mutual display <strong>of</strong> prowess which may have been<br />

intended to build rapport, but which may have caused some suspicion in the interviewee);<br />

unspoken questions which nevertheless seemed to be around included: do [we] want to<br />

dance together, what is the rhythm that is going to carry us along? This dance felt slow to<br />
