3. Research Interviews: Consent Form for Participants<br />

The first part <strong>of</strong> this document describes a research project which is being carried out,<br />

outlining the aims <strong>of</strong> the research, how it will be done, and indicating how ethical issues<br />

will be treated. The second part is a statement to be signed by those who are willing to take<br />

part in the research.<br />

Part One: Aims <strong>of</strong> the research<br />

The research will develop a better understanding <strong>of</strong> the place <strong>of</strong> religion and spirituality in<br />

contemporary psychoanalysis. This is part <strong>of</strong> a PhD programme being undertaken by<br />

Alistair Ross, Lecturer in Counselling, School <strong>of</strong> Public Policy, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Birmingham.<br />

From September 2007 this post is being transferred to Newman College <strong>of</strong> Higher<br />

Education, Birmingham, although Alistair Ross remains as a doctoral student at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Birmingham.<br />

How the research will be done<br />

The theoretical context for this work is a form <strong>of</strong> narrative analysis based on personal<br />

reflection, published texts and interviews. Interviews will be conducted with<br />

psychoanalysts in Britain, Ireland and the United States and recorded (digitally and on a<br />

mini-disc). Verbatim transcripts will be analyzed in an attempt to understand how concepts<br />
