Reformed <strong>Church</strong>es to <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixteenth century. It is,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, incomplete, but, as far as it goes, <strong>the</strong> most extensive,<br />

eloquent, and dramatic history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation by an enthusiastic<br />

partisan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformers, especially Calvin, in full sympathy with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

position and faith, except on <strong>the</strong> union <strong>of</strong> <strong>Church</strong> and State and <strong>the</strong><br />

persecution <strong>of</strong> heretics. The first division, which is devoted to <strong>the</strong><br />

Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Reformation till 1530, had an extraordinary circulation in<br />

England and America. Ranke, with his calm, judicial temperament,<br />

wondered that such a book could be written in <strong>the</strong> nineteenth century.<br />

The losses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation in German Switzerland were more than<br />

made up by <strong>the</strong> gains in French Switzerland; that is, in <strong>the</strong> three Cantons,<br />

Vaud, Neuchàtel, and Geneva. f332 Protestantism moved westward. Calvin<br />

continued, improved, and completed <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> Zwingli, and gave it a<br />

wider significance. Geneva took <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> Zürich, and surpassed in<br />

influence <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Zwingli and <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r. It became “<strong>the</strong><br />

Protestant Rome,” from which proceeded <strong>the</strong> ideas and impulses for <strong>the</strong>
