§ 5. THE ZWINGLI LITERATURE.<br />

The general literature in § 4, especially Bullinger’s <strong>History</strong> and<br />

Egli’s Collection. The public libraries and archives in Zürich contain<br />

<strong>the</strong> various editions <strong>of</strong> Zwingli’s works, and <strong>the</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> his own<br />

library with marginal notes, which were exhibited in connection<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Zwingli celebration in 1884. See Zwingli-Ausstellung<br />

veranstaltet von der Stadtbiblio<strong>the</strong>k in Zürich in Verbindung mit<br />

dem Staatsarchiv und der Cantonalbiblio<strong>the</strong>k. Zürich, 1884. A<br />

pamphlet <strong>of</strong> 24 pages, with a descriptive catalogue <strong>of</strong> Zwingli’s<br />

books and remains. The annotations furnish fragmentary material<br />

for a knowledge <strong>of</strong> his <strong>the</strong>ological growth. See Usteri’s Initia<br />

Epistolae. A supplement <strong>of</strong> 75 pages was ed. by G. SCHULTHESS (d.<br />

1866) and MARTHALER in 1861, and contains letters <strong>of</strong> Zwingli to<br />

Rhenanus and o<strong>the</strong>rs. A new critical edition is much needed and<br />

contemplated for <strong>the</strong> “Corpus Reformatorum” by a commission <strong>of</strong><br />

Swiss scholars. Zwingli’s Correspond. in HERMINJARD, <strong>Vol</strong>s. I. and II.<br />

The first edition <strong>of</strong> Zwingli’s Works appeared at Zürich, 1545, in 4<br />

vols. USTERI and VÖGELIN: M. H. Zwingli’s Schriften im Auszuge,<br />

Zürich, 1819 and ‘20, 2 vols. (A systematic exhibition <strong>of</strong> Zwingli’s<br />

teaching in modern German.) Ano<strong>the</strong>r translation <strong>of</strong> select works<br />

into modern German by R. CHRISTOFFEL, Zür., 1843, 9 small vols.<br />
