Conversely, the upper left and lower left-hand areas are dead spaces, and elements placed<br />

in these areas are unlikely to be noticed. In addition, video and text content will be<br />

perceived separately, and lengthy text next to video will most likely be ignored (British<br />

Broadcasting Corporation, 2002).<br />

An application that will be deployed primarily on the television should keep text<br />

elements to a minimum. In addition, text that is broken up into chunks is easier to read<br />

from a distance. The same rules are looser if the application is designed to be accessed<br />

from a computer, because users are closer to the monitor and accustomed to reading text<br />

on screen. Figure 5.34 illustrates some design recommendations from the BBC for<br />

effective page layout for the standard L shape design.<br />
