interaction experts agree that metaphors can both be helpful and harmful. For example,<br />

metaphors that are too literal can be too constraining to the design; on the other hand,<br />

metaphors that are too abstract can fail to do its job. Metaphors, therefore, should be used<br />

appropriately and with caution.<br />

Figure 5.45 illustrate PBS’ Cisco’s Journal application, which uses the journal /<br />

scrapbook metaphor to tell the story of Cisco and his family. The application is<br />

successful in keeping the metaphor consistent throughout the application. In addition, the<br />

metaphor is integrated into the television component of the show, where each week<br />

viewers actually watch Cisco – an electronic artist – sit down at his desk and work on his<br />

online “journal.”<br />
