In early 2005, the Gemstar-TV Guide-owned horseracing channel, TVG Network,<br />

launched an interactive TV channel (see Figure 3.4), marking the first time that iTV<br />

gambling has been offered in the United States. Prior to launching its iTV channel,<br />

TVG’s Web- and phone-based wagering services processed over $300 million in wagers<br />

in 2004, up 42% from the previous year (Swedlow, 2005c). With its new channel, TVG<br />

Interactive allows viewers to access horseracing news and results, live odds, information<br />

on probable payoffs, picks and handicapping information, and reports on race conditions.<br />

More importantly, in states where it is legal, TVG Interactive allows viewers to place<br />

pari-mutuel bets on races using their TVG wagering account and remote control<br />

(Swedlow, 2005c).<br />

According to Tracy Swedlow, such services have already proven highly lucrative<br />

in the U.K. For example, during the second half of 2004, revenues from BSkyB’s SkyBet<br />
