3.4 REALITY PROGRAMMING<br />

Reality shows, which are engineered to be suspenseful from episode to episode,<br />

lend themselves extremely well to viewer interaction, as they typically amass a loyal<br />

audience base through the season. In many reality programs, contestants on the show are<br />

pitted against one another. Audiences have been eager to speculate, for example, which<br />

suitor the bachelor/bachelorette will eliminate next, who will be fired from the job, who<br />

will win the ultimate prize, etc. Some reality programs allow votes from viewers to<br />

determine, in part, the path of future episodes. Within this genre, ABC Enhanced TV has<br />

offered interactivity for Super Millionaire, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and Celebrity<br />

Mole: Yucatan, among others.<br />

In 2003, ABC Enhanced TV collaborated with the AFI eTV workshop and<br />

deployed an enhanced version of Celebrity Mole: Yucatan (see Figure 3.6). It was the<br />

first prototype from the AFI eTV workshop to ever be deployed in the market. In addition<br />

to being available on ABC’s proprietary two-screen interactive television platform, the<br />
