interact with television shows by utilizing their cellular devices. According to AT&T,<br />

more than 7.5 million American Idol-related text messages were sent by AT&T Wireless<br />

customers throughout the 2003 season. At one point during the voting, over 2,300 text<br />

messages per second were processed (AT&T Press Release, 2003).<br />

According to the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA), there are<br />

currently over 170 million wireless subscribers in the U.S. In addition, CTIA estimates<br />

that nearly 46,000 more become subscribers each day. As Figure 1.4 illustrates, the<br />

number of handsets in the U.S. is projected to shoot up from about 3.3 million in 2003 to<br />

34.8 million in 2006. In 2003, an estimated 92% of wireless subscribers were digital.<br />

Statistics from the Wireless World Forum indicate that in 2003, 126 million Java phones<br />

were deployed worldwide. That number is estimated to reach 32 million in the U.S. by<br />

2006.<br />

Interactive television has already proven to be a significant enabler in driving<br />

mobile SMS transactions in Europe as well as parts of Asia such as China, Hong Kong,<br />
