Programme managers attribute these shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs to “frequent shortage of supplies, ART<br />

<strong>and</strong> [HIV] test kits” as well as “low uptake of NVP [nevirap<strong>in</strong>e prophylaxis] by HIV-positive<br />

pregnant mothers”. 45<br />

The situation with prophylaxis for neonates is even worse. Among <strong>in</strong>fants born to mothers who<br />

tested positive, only about 30% received post-natal prophylaxis – ma<strong>in</strong>ly because about half of<br />

all deliveries <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tanzania</strong> occur at home <strong>and</strong> many <strong>in</strong>fants are not brought to a health facility for<br />

post-natal check-up.<br />

The performance of the National Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> Leprosy Control Programme cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />
