Source: MoEVT, Basic Education Statistics Tanzania (BEST) 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008
The data show a generally positive trend until 2006 with the number of pupils per latrine, declining
from 74 in 2003 to 60 in 2006. However, data indicate no change between 2006 and 2007, and
a slight deterioration in the number of pupils per latrine in 2008. Without a significant increase in
investment, the MKUKUTA target will not be met by 2010.
Data on sanitation in government primary schools for 2007 also reveal significant regional
disparities (Figure 45). At national level, the number of latrines is only 37% of the total required.
At regional level, data range from Dar es Salaam (22%), Shinyanga (24%) and Manyara (27%),
well below the national average, to almost 60% in Iringa and Kilimanjaro.
