even though the majority of tanzanians cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be engaged <strong>in</strong> agriculture, it rema<strong>in</strong>s the least<br />

remunerative sector <strong>in</strong> the economy. Among households whose heads identified agriculture as<br />

their ma<strong>in</strong> activity, the rate of poverty is highest: 38.7%. the comb<strong>in</strong>ation of a large portion of the<br />

population engaged <strong>in</strong> agriculture <strong>and</strong> high poverty rates expla<strong>in</strong>s why 74% of all poor people<br />

are primarily dependent on agriculture (table 45). these data <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>in</strong>come poverty is an<br />

overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gly agricultural phenomenon.<br />
