Given these factors, it is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that improvements <strong>in</strong> water coverage are not yet evident.<br />
The upcom<strong>in</strong>g TDHS <strong>2009</strong>/10 will provide further <strong>in</strong>dication on the extent to which allocations to<br />
the sector have resulted <strong>in</strong>to changes <strong>in</strong> access.<br />
Sanitation<br />

Household sanitation<br />
The ma<strong>in</strong> source of data on household sanitation is household surveys, which report what types<br />
of latr<strong>in</strong>e are used by households. However, the survey category ‘traditional pit latr<strong>in</strong>e’ does not<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>guish between basic pit latr<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> latr<strong>in</strong>es with washable slabs. Latr<strong>in</strong>es with washable<br />
slabs are classified as ‘improved’, <strong>and</strong> those without washable slabs as ‘unimproved’ as they do<br />
not provide effective prevention aga<strong>in</strong>st disease (as per UNICEF <strong>and</strong> World Health Organisation<br />
(WHO) guidel<strong>in</strong>es).<br />
