ABSTRACT
The agrarian reform and the invasions to governmental or private farms are issues
that have been treated for a very long time in Guatemala; they have been
discussed since the failed agrarian reform prompted by the former president Juan
Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán until now.
This article begins with a brief reference to the historical evolution of the issue
about the possession of the land in Guatemala and the role performed by the governments
in charge. This analysis comes to the present time, when the public institution
responsible for the subject is Fund of Lands (Fondo de Tierras –FONTIERRAS–);
from which, the organization chart, policies and internal procedures, are presented.
From this analysis, a solution to the access of the land through the market is proposed.
An approximation to the market of lands in Guatemala, is also included.
