The Representation of Salta’s History
Gutiérrez, Teresita del Milagro – Argentina
“In current society the function of Science diffusion lies not only on the information superficial contact
(implying a mechanical conception of a subject considered as a passive and receptive in regard of
knowledge) pretends generate changes in the behavior which implies comprehension, conservation or
transformation in conceptual paradigms that the individual has in order to realize the construction of
knowledge an applies adapting the several types of stages. The multistage characteristics inside a
diffusion activity in which can be approached the Sciences that seeks educate, allows to recreate a
permanent contact with scientific activity, no matter where the socio-cultural stage is in which the topic
develops: a school, a street, a home, etc.” 1
A museum.... an this is the stage of socio-cultural of informal education that we will
observe, as an specific place for diffusion of researches reached by the regional
Histography.
In particular, we will consider two museums of Salta: The Historical Museum sited in
the Cabildo of Salta; and the “Traditions and Customs”, placed in President José
Evaristo Uriburu's House. In the first, we go round ten thousands years of local
history, in the second, the traditions and customs of a social class from Salta at the
beginning of the XIX century. In both cases, they shows only one possible
interpretation for a long time, referring to a romantic past and legitimated by
Historiography from more than forty or fifty years.
During the first years of the XXI century, we feel the need to raise the necessity to
show the visitors'museums and consider their opinion, all the cultural background and
the new researches from this province that have been contributing during this years.
We are acknowledge that several local researchers are developing works, recognized
nationally and internationally (for example: Sara Mata de López, Emma Raspi, Gabriela
Caretta, Rubén Correa, etc), who have published and constantly publishing their
historiographies discoveries.
From one of these authors we read: “...in the last thirty years the historical research
has shown the complexity of the American rural world approaching from a regional
perspective the agrarian areas, the role and the characteristics of Spanish-American
farm, thus the agrarian community of rural production, the importance of commercial
capitals in it, the systems of rural work and the relation between the farms and urbane
market, among other topics”. 2
However, these among other topics we do not see reflected as speeches or supports
of expositions in Salta 's Historical Museums.
So, we understand that we are in front of a big challenge. We believe is time that those
museums show, considering to their visitors, the current researches and with this
provide others perspectives of our local history.
And going back to the first paragraph, we interpret we should make a change to
provide a constant educational service to the public that visit us, giving them the
discoveries of new conceptual paradigms.
Taking into account several voices from researchers the cultural heritage, who have
already expressed their interests for some time now, such as the architect Carlos
Moreno: “...The American man, the Argentinean man must have as one of this
fundamental rights the acknowledgement and spiritual enjoyment of his roots based in
a history and singular circumstances that conform today, his regional and national
