Each individual δ 13 C and δ 15 N value was plotted against size for the two main exploited<br />

species, Merluccius merluccius and Nephrops norvegicus (Figures 4 (a and b) and 5 (a and b)), and<br />

linear regression (equations given in Table 2 was used to explore relationships between size (total<br />

length for fishes or cephalothorax length for crustaceans). This analysis indicated that stable carbon<br />

and nitrogen isotope ratios for hake (n = 43) increased significantly with size (+3‰, r² = 0.74, p <<br />

0.0001 for δ 15 N; +1.5‰, r² = 0.56, p < 0.0001 for δ 13 C).<br />
