2.2.2 Federal Reserve Bank of New York Archives (New York City)<br />

The records of the FRBNY are collected in the bank’s archival division. The fi<strong>les</strong> have a chronological<br />

date range from the formation of the Federal Reserve System to the present day, although confidentiality<br />

requirements keep some fi<strong>les</strong> out of public circu<strong>la</strong>tion and require that others be released only after<br />

redaction. During the Second World War, the FRBNY was the fiscal agent of the US Trea<strong>sur</strong>y<br />

Department and conducted most of the nation’s foreign gold operations. Thus, its records offer valuable<br />

information on international gold policies. Some of these fi<strong>les</strong> are also avai<strong>la</strong>ble as photocopies at the<br />

US National Archives II (College Park, Mary<strong>la</strong>nd).<br />

Papers of FRBNY President Sproul<br />

These fi<strong>les</strong> are selected from the personal papers of FRBNY President Arthur Sproul, who ran the New<br />

York bank from 1936 to 1941. The papers include his correspondence with banking and government<br />

officials and the memos and reports sent to him by subordinate officers within the bank. They are not<br />

sorted by boxes.<br />
