sustainabilityshould besupported byconsistent measuring and monitoring (SITA 2009:
13, 14). ITsystems with specialized data mining capabilities can help to derive necessary
data more easily. However, this requires aconsistent availability ofenvironmental
impact data,calculated with compatible schemes.
Furthermore, monitoring should not only happen internally, but emission data about air
transport tasks should also be externally reported through ITsystems. Especially in
freight transportation this would allow companies to monitor their transportation providers
also environmentally. Thus, by creating competitive pressures, future environmental
savings can be generated.
“Generation sensitive” environmental sustainable airtransportation
As mentioned inthe introduction, the effects of negative environmental impacts could
influence future generations. Environmental sustainability has to be implemented in all
sectors ofthe economy–the air industry is one of the sectors wherein highlydisproportional
effects are given. Accounting for only around 0.2% of the EU’s Gross Value
Added (Eurostat 2013), civil aviation isresponsible for around 3% of the EU’s CO 2
emissions (European Union 2012: 123). Table 1 summarizes details including the
transport &logistics sector. Asaresult the EU has already included commercial airlines
into theircarbon emission tradingsystem (European Commission 2013b).
