Základy dnešní zoologické zahrady byly položeny roku 1908
„otcem evropského ptactva“, ústeckým velkoobchodníkem a
mecenášem Heinrichem Lumpem « (1859-1936). V době, kdy byl
lov zpěvného ptactva oblíbenou kratochvílí, se Lumpe zasazoval
o jeho celoevropský zákaz a na místě dnešní zoologické zahrady
založil první středoevropskou ptačí rezervaci; až do své smrti provozoval
zařízení na své náklady, ročně si ho prohlédlo až 50 tisíc
návštěvníků. Ptačí rezervace se z původních šesti hektarů na svazích
Mariánské skály rozrostla na dnešních 26 hektarů a stala se
šestou největší zoologickou zahradou v České republice. Zastoupeno
je zde 230 živočišných druhů, celkem poskytuje zahrada přístřeší
pro 1500 živočichů. Vedle původního trpasličího hrádku
Heinrichsburg je zde také k vidění plastika největšího českého
zahradního trpaslíka z roku 2004.

The core of the current ZOO was founded in 1908 by the „Father
of European Fowl“, a wholesale businessman and sponsor,
Heinrich Lumpe « (1859-1936). At the time
when hunting song birds was a favourite
pastime, Lumpe advocated a pan-European
ban on this and established the first
bird sanctuary in Central Europe on the site
of today’s ZOO. He ran the facility at his
own costs until his death, and it had up to 50
000 visitors every year. The bird sanctuary
expanded from the original 6 hectares on
the slopes of the Mariánská Rock to the
current 26 hectares and became the sixth
largest zoological garden in the Czech
Republic. More than 230 species are represented
here, and in total the ZOO has enclosures
for 1500 animals. Apart from the original
Heinrichsburg gnome castle, there is
also a statue of the biggest Czech garden
gnome from 2004.

Die Grundsteine des heutigen Zoologischen Gartens wurden im
Jahre 1908 von Heinrich Lumpe « (1859-1936) gelegt – dem
„Vater der europäischen Vogelwelt“ und Aussiger Großhändler
und Förderer. Zur Zeit, als das Jagen von Gesangsvögeln ein beliebtes
Kurzweil war, setzte sich Lumpe für sein europaweites Verbot
ein und an der Stelle des heutigen Zoologischen Gartens
gründete er die erste mitteleuropäische Vogelreservation; bis zu
seinem Tod betrieb er die Anstalt auf eigene Kosten; jährlich
besuchten den Zoo bis 50 Tausend Besucher. Das Vogelreservat
dehnte sich aus den ursprünglichen 6 Hektar auf den Abhängen
des Marienfelsens bis zu heutigen 26 Hektar aus und wurde
dadurch der sechst größte zoologische Garten in der Tschechischen
Republik. Es gibt hier 230 Tierarten, insgesamt bietet der
Zoo ein Obdach für 1500 Tiere. Außer dem ursprünglichen Trpasličí
hrádek Heinrichsburg kann man hier auch die Plastik des
größten tschechischen Gartenzwerges aus dem Jahre 2004
sehen.
