Kesin olmayışlığı ya da belirsizliği olasılık ile ölçtüğümüz için, olasılık istatistik bilimi içerisinde çok önemli bir yer tutar, bu nedenle de olasılıkla ilgili bazı kavramların iyi bilinmesi gerekir. İstatistik biliminden, bir araştırmanın tüm evrelerinde; planlama, veri toplama, veri değerlendirme ve sunum-yayın evrelerinin hepsinde yararlanmak gerekir. Bunu amatörce değil, bir istatistik uzmanı ya da profesyonelinden yardım alarak, ortak çalışarak yapmak çalışmanın değerini artıracaktır. Bu aynı zamanda istatistiğin, sadece gereksinimin en çok duyulduğu veri değerlendirme aşamasında kullanımından kurtarıp, planlama, veri toplama ve sunum aşamalarında da etkin bir şekilde kullanımına olanak sağlayacaktır. Bu sunumda, araştırmanın planlama, veri toplama, değerlendirme ve sunum aşamalarında sıklıkla yapılan hatalar üzerinde durulacaktır. Planlama aşamasında yapılan hatalar arasında, örneklem genişliği ve güç hesaplamaları ile ilgili olanlar üzerinde durulacaktır. Değerlendirme aşamasında, yanlış istatistiksel test kullanımı, test ile uyumlu olmayan tanımlayıcı istatistiklerin kullanımı en sık yapılan hatalar olarak göze çarpmaktadır. Sunum aşamasında en sık yapılan hatalar arasında, uygun grafik ve tablo kullanmama, uygun olmayan özet istatistiklerin verilmesi, standart sapma ve standart hata kavramlarının karıştırılması, gerçek p değerlerinin verilmemesi üzerinde durulacaktır. Hataların önlenmesine ve bilimsel araştırmaların değerlerinin artırılmasına yönelik önerilere yer verilecektir. Anahtar Kelimeler: istatistiksel hatalar, veri toplama, veri değerlendirme, istatistiksel sunum Since the science of statistics usually deals with results derived from samples and making inferences about the population from which the sample was drawn, it is also referred as the science of decision making under uncertainty. Since probability is a measure of uncertainty, it holds an important place within the context of statistics and therefore people using statistics should be familiar with probability concepts. One should use statistics in every phase of a research, namely the planning phase, data collection phase, analysis or evaluation phase and reporting or publication phase. Those who are not very familiar with statistics, instead of trying to carry out statistical issues themselves in every phase of a research, should consult a statistician and either should get statistical advice from a professional or invite a statistician to their team and work together. This will also avoid the attitude towards using statistics - the idea that statistics is a necessity - only in the analysis phase of a research, where the need for it is maximum and will help to utilize statistical methods in every phase of a research where needed. In this presentation I will try to put emphasis on the most frequently encountered statistical errors in different phases of a research. In the planning phase failure to report the required sample size and not making any power calculations are the most frequent types of errors. Use of wrong statistical tests, summarizing data with summary measures which are not compatible with the statistical tests used are the most common types of error in the analysis phase. In the reporting phase inappropriate or wrong use of graphs and tables, not using proper variability measures, using standard deviation and standard error for wrong purposes and failure to report exact p values seem to be the most frequent errors. Some recommendations will be made how to avoid these errors and how to increase the credibility of the researches by avoiding the frequently committed statistical errors. Derginin yaşatılmasında ve geliştirilmesinde sunulan yazılar son derecede önem taşımaktadır. Sunulan eserler derginin ana temasına ve yazım kurallarına uygunlukları açısından değerlendirildikten sonra hakemlerin görüşlerine sunulmaktadır. Bu dönemde editörler kurulu ve özellikle dil editörleri gerekli düzeltmeleri belirleyip yazarlardan talep etmektedir. Eserlerin bilimsel değerlendirmesini yapacak olan hakemler konu ile ilişkilendirilerek dikkatle seçilmekte ve gene derginin devamı ve gelişmesinde çok önem taşıyan bir görevi üstlenmektedirler. Yazarlar, hakem veya hakemler de yazar olabilmektedirler. Dolayısıyla, aynı amaca yönelik olarak çalışan bu değerli ekibi oluşturan iki grubun arasında bazan yanlış anlaşılmalar olabilmektedir. Panelin bu bölümünde yazarlar ve hakemler ile ilgili bazı gözlemlerimizin aktarılması, konu ile ilgili görüşlerin tartışılabileceği ve dileklerle önerilerin değerlendirileceği bir platform oluşturulması amaçlanmaktadır. Authors form the backbone of Turkish Journal Of Biochemistry. The manuscripts that are presented t-for publication in the journal have a great impact on its maintenance and development. The manuscripts are first screened for their suitability to the scope and the rules of the journal. Then, they are presented to the referees for their evaluation. At this stage of screening, the editors, especially technical editors detect the points that need correction and demand these from the authors. Authors are selected carefully on the basis of expertise in order to take over a mission, which is again an essential component of journals maintenance and development. Authors may also be referees and referees may be authors. Therefore, the two arms of the same essential team aiming at a common target may have misunderstandings and conflicts sometimes. This part of the panel discussion aims at sharing some of these experiences, getting comments and suggestions and providing a platform for fruitful discussions on this matter.
