The feasting and burial rituals involved the conspicuous consumption of exotic goods, including marine (primarily Natica and Marginella) shell and cannel coal beads, cache blades, and finished bifaces of exotic chert, copper ornaments, and slate objects. Red ochre also appears to have been used. These locales served as base camps for the harvesting of punctually abundant resources (such as anadromous fish spawns) and for logistical forays to local resource procurement areas. The cold weather aspect of the Gibraltar phase is poorly known, but it is believed to be characterized by the dispersal of family groups into the interior, away from the Lake Erie shoreline area. The Missionary Island No. 1 site, in the Maumee River Valley, has revealed evidence of Gibraltar Phase settlement, and may illustrate this cold weather aspect (Bechtel and Stothers 1993). The material culture of the Riviere au Vase phase (A.D. 750-1000) in the Maumee River Valley (Figure 4.6) has recently been reviewed by Schneider (2000). The ceramic series is characterized by Riviere Ware, somewhat larger, globular, collarless and grit-tempered vessels exhibiting neck and rim smoothing and elaborate dentate and linear stamp motifs (Figure 4.5). In difference to the Gibraltar ceramic series, Riviere Ware displays exterior folded lips, high rims and interior decoration. Riviere Ware is associated predominantly with Madison points, utilized flakes, and bone tools. The burial program of the Riviere au Vase phase is characterized by a rapid decline in mound construction and regional social interaction, the latter of which is demonstrated by the decline of exotica in graves. Increased local interaction is attested to by numerous discrete “mortuary districts” around the southwestern Lake Erie rim. These site complexes are often characterized by expansive cemeteries with horizontally overlapping habitation areas, and include among many others the Younge and Riviere au Vase sites near Lake St. Clair, the LaSalle/Lucier site in extreme southwest peninsular Ontario, the Reau and Gard Island sites in Maumee Bay, the Squaw Island site in Sandusky Bay, and the Libben site. Burials from these locales are predominantly supine burials, some of which exhibit ceremonial disinterment and defleshing associated with bone perforation, skeletal rearticula- 76 Stothers and Abel
