U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> uniforms are outward symbols of Naval organization and of military<br />

rank or rate. Differentiating between officer and enlisted personnel is an<br />

important element in the morale, pride, discipline, and effectiveness of the<br />

<strong>Navy</strong>.<br />

B. Enabling Objective(s):<br />

10.1 Identify the definitions of <strong>Navy</strong> terms related to pay grade and job<br />

specialty.<br />

10.2 Identify <strong>Navy</strong> enlisted rate, insignia, and headgear.<br />

10.3 Identify service stripes, their purpose, and requirements for<br />

earning them.<br />

10.4 Identify <strong>Navy</strong> officer rank, insignia, and headgear.<br />

10.5 Identify <strong>Navy</strong> line and staff officers by their insignia.<br />

10.6 Identify enlisted pay grade and insignia of the other U.S. Armed<br />

Services.<br />

10.7 Identify officer pay grade and insignia of the other U.S. Armed<br />

2. Terms Related to Pay Grade and Job Specialty<br />

a. Rating--An enlisted person's occupation or job specialty within<br />

the <strong>Navy</strong>. Example: Operations Specialist, Gunner's Mate.<br />

b. Pay grade--Used by all services to indicate the level of pay.<br />

Applies to E-1 through E-9 and O-1 through O-10.<br />

c. Rate--Identifies personnel by rating (occupation) and pay grade.<br />

Example: Boatswain's Mate Third Class (BM3).<br />

d. Nonrated person--A member that is E-1, E-2, or E-3.<br />

(1) Apprentice--Nonrated personnel belong to a general<br />

occupational field. Example: airman, constructionman,<br />

fireman, hospitalman, or seaman.<br />
