(1) All compartments aboard ship are designed to make the best<br />

use of available space and berthing compartments are no<br />

exception.<br />

(2) Common items in berthing compartments include:<br />

(a) Stand up lockers for military and civilian clothes<br />

storage<br />

(b) Bunk and locker combination (coffin locker)<br />

(c) Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBDs)--Provide<br />

oxygen for wearer to escape from a smoke-filled<br />

compartment.<br />

(3) Berthing compartments have more than one entrance/exit for<br />

emergencies.<br />

d. Boatswain's locker--Used to store line and other deck related<br />

gear.<br />

e. Repair locker<br />

(1) Functions of a repair locker include:<br />

(a) Stowage of equipment needed for firefighting and<br />

repair of the ship.<br />

(b) <strong>Command</strong> and control center for the fire party.<br />

(2) <strong>The</strong> size and function of the ship determine the number of<br />

repair lockers on board.<br />

f. Paint locker--A flammable liquid stowage space.<br />
