(4) Man overboard procedures<br />

e. Forecastle<br />

(a) Any person who sees someone go overboard immediately<br />

sound the alarm, “Man overboard, man overboard, port<br />

(starboard) side.”<br />

1 Throw a life ring or life jacket into the water,<br />

if possible. Keep the person in sight. If a dye<br />

marker is available, drop it into the water.<br />

2 Point directly at the man overboard. Continue<br />

pointing until the personnel on the bridge have<br />

the man overboard in sight.<br />

(b) <strong>The</strong> officer of the deck (OOD) will maneuver the ship<br />

to a recovery position. At the same time, the word is<br />

passed twice over the 1MC announcing system, “Man<br />

overboard, man overboard, port (starboard) side.<br />

(c) Six or more short blasts are sounded on the ship’s<br />

whistle.<br />

(d) All personnel will muster with their divisions.”<br />

(e) <strong>The</strong> quartermaster will hoist the Oscar flag<br />

(1) Is a weather deck forward of the superstructure.<br />

(2) <strong>The</strong> following equipment may be located on the forecastle:<br />

(a) Anchor windlass and controls<br />

(b) Anchor chain and securing gear<br />

(c) Jack staff--From which the Union Jack (starred blue<br />

flag) flies when the ship is not underway.<br />

f. Communication equipment<br />

(1) Signal lights and flags are used to visually communicate<br />

messages to other ships and small boats.<br />

(2) Signal flags are raised on a flag hoist using light lines<br />

called halyards.<br />

g. Bridge (pilothouse)--Personnel on the bridge have operational<br />

control of the ship, including navigation, while underway.<br />

4. Line Handling Procedures<br />

a. Take in mooring lines in preparation for getting the ship<br />

underway<br />
