3 To dislodge any foreign object, use a hooking<br />

motion with your index finger from the base of<br />

the victim's tongue along the inside of the<br />

cheek.<br />

(d) Open the victim’s airway.<br />

1 Place your hand on victim’s forehead.<br />

2 Place fingers of your other hand under the bony<br />

part of victim’s chin. (Do not put pressure<br />

under chin).<br />

3 Tilt victim’s head and lift jaw (do not close<br />

their mouth).<br />

4 Place ear over victim’s mouth and nose.<br />

5 Look at the chest; listen and feel for breathing<br />

for 3-5 seconds.<br />

(e) If the victim is not breathing, say, “Not breathing”<br />

so someone will get help, then give breaths.<br />

1 Pinch nose.<br />

2 Open your mouth.<br />

3 Take a deep breath.<br />

4 Make an airtight seal around the victim’s mouth.<br />

5 Give 2 full breaths, each lasting 1-1½ seconds.<br />

(Pause between each breath.)<br />

(f) If unsuccessful, perform abdominal thrusts.<br />

1 Straddle victim’s thighs.<br />

2 Place heel of one hand slightly above the navel<br />

and below tip of breastbone.<br />

3 Place the other hand directly on top (interlock<br />

fingers) and push into person’s abdomen with<br />

quick upward thrusts 6 to 10 times.<br />

4 Continue sequence until person breathes, you are<br />

exhausted, another trained individual relieves<br />

you, or medical assistance arrives.<br />
