(3) Security for sea lines of communications--To keep the seas<br />

open between the U.S. and:<br />

(a) Deployed military forces; e.g., Iraq and Afghanistan.<br />

(b) Its allies; e.g., Great Britain.<br />

(c) Foreign nations, for commercial trade.<br />

5. Mission of the U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> in the Future, according to the Sea Power 21<br />

Plan<br />

a. <strong>The</strong> U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> developed “Sea Power 21” to provide a vision of the<br />

future for the <strong>Navy</strong> during the 21st Century.<br />

b. <strong>The</strong> Sea Power 21 Plan is based on three concepts: Sea strike,<br />

Sea Shield, and Sea Basing.<br />

(1) Sea Strike<br />

(a) <strong>The</strong> projection of combat power will be critical in the<br />

future as it was in the past.<br />

(b) Technological advances will result in:<br />

1 Improved intelligence and weapon accuracy.<br />

2 In-flight targeting of missiles.<br />

3 Unmanned combat vehicles.<br />

4 Joint campaigns that include sea, air, and land<br />

forces.<br />

(a) <strong>The</strong> <strong>Navy</strong> will continue to defend the United States and<br />

its national interests.<br />

(b) Technological advances will result in:<br />

1 Quicker identification and response to threats on<br />

the national security.<br />

2 <strong>The</strong> capability to engage inbound enemy ballistic<br />

missiles.<br />
