(b) Do NOT make agreements with one's captors to fulfill a<br />

condition, such as a promise not to attempt escape, in<br />

return for favored treatment. Such agreements are<br />

called paroles.<br />

(4) Article IV: If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep<br />

faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information<br />

or take part in any actions which might be harmful to my<br />

comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I<br />

will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and<br />

will back them up in every way.<br />

(a) Actions that harm fellow prisoners are shameful.<br />

(b) Do NOT help enemy personnel identify fellow prisoners<br />

that have knowledge that would be valuable.<br />

(c) <strong>The</strong> senior line officer or noncommissioned officer<br />

within the prisoner of war camp will take command.<br />

(d) All prisoners must support and work within the POW<br />

organization.<br />

(5) Article V: When questioned, should I become a prisoner of<br />

war, I am required to give name, rank, service, number and<br />

date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to<br />

the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written<br />

statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful<br />

to their cause.<br />

(a) Prisoners of war may tell their captors about:<br />

1 <strong>The</strong>ir health and welfare.<br />

2 Routine matters of camp administration.<br />

(b) For prisoners of war, the following are forbidden:<br />

1 Oral and written confessions, whether true or<br />

false.<br />

2 Questionnaires<br />

3 Personal history statements<br />

4 Oral or written communication on behalf of the<br />

enemy, such as:<br />

a Recordings and broadcasts<br />

b Appeals to other prisoners<br />

c Appeals for peace or surrender<br />
