During a ship's entire commissioned life, it will always have Sailors on<br />

watch. Whatever type of watch is assigned, devote full attention to it.<br />

Inattention or negligence can have serious consequences.<br />

17.6 Identify the duties and responsibilities of various shipboard and<br />

barracks watches.<br />

2. Purpose and Responsibilities of Watchstanding<br />

a. <strong>Navy</strong> personnel are assigned duty as watchstanders to perform many<br />

jobs in port and at sea.<br />

b. Most watch assignments last four hours.<br />

c. Watchstanders serve many vital functions:<br />

(1) Provide security to prevent:<br />

(a) Sabotage<br />

(b) Damage to property<br />

(c) <strong>The</strong>ft<br />

(d) Unauthorized personnel entering a restricted area<br />

(2) Ensure the safety of personnel and equipment; e.g., check<br />

for fire, flooding, and machinery problems.<br />

(3) Provide an important role in fulfilling the <strong>Navy</strong>'s mission.<br />
