LINE HANDLING LABORATORY 1<br />

In this laboratory, you will learn two basic knots that will commonly be<br />

used during your <strong>Navy</strong> career. You will be preparing a heaving line to throw<br />

from the ship to a pier, or from a pier back to the ship. You will be<br />

preparing a mooring line for use by coiling, faking, and flemishing. This<br />

lesson discusses the procedures for securing for sea, and the safety<br />

precautions to be followed when securing equipment. In addition, you will<br />

learn the procedures to break out, don, connect, test, operate, and secure a<br />

sound-powered telephone.<br />

B. Enabling Objective(s):<br />

4.4 Tie the square knot and bowline using small stuff.<br />

4.5 Make up and heave a heaving line.<br />

22.12 Explain the relationship between teamwork and line handling to get<br />

the ship underway and moor the ship to the pier.<br />

4.6 As a line handling team member, perform basic line handling<br />

procedures to:<br />

a. Make a line ready for use by coiling, faking, and flemishing down.<br />

b. Take in mooring lines from the pier in preparation for getting the<br />

ship underway.<br />

c. Moor a ship to a pier.<br />

5.5 Perform the procedures used to break out, don, connect, test,<br />

operate, and secure a sound-powered telephone headset.<br />

23.28 Explain the relationship between the <strong>Navy</strong> Core Values and line<br />

handling to get the ship underway and moor the ship to the pier.<br />

a. Place the ball approximately 18 inches from your palm, and coil<br />

the remainder of the line in 10-inch coils.<br />
