(6) Article 34--Prisoners shall be allowed to worship<br />

their god.<br />

(7) Article 38--Prisoners are allowed to exercise and<br />

participate in sports and intellectual pastimes.<br />

(8) Articles 71 and 72--Prisoners are permitted to communicate<br />

with their families.<br />

5. Relationship Between the <strong>Navy</strong> Core Values and Conduct During Armed<br />

Conflict<br />

a. Law of Armed Conflict<br />

(1) Honor--During wartime, it is honorable to:<br />

(a) NOT cause unnecessary human misery and destruction.<br />

(b) LIMIT hostilities against civilian noncombatants.<br />

(2) Courage--Have the courage to defy others who desire to<br />

cause more destruction than the mission requires.<br />

(3) Commitment--Be committed to upholding the provisions of the<br />

Law of Armed Conflict.<br />

b. Code of Conduct<br />

(1) Honor<br />

(a) It is honorable to NEVER voluntarily surrender to<br />

enemy forces.<br />

(b) When a prisoner of the enemy, it COMPROMISES one's<br />

honor to:<br />

1 Make paroles with one's captors.<br />

2 Perform actions harmful to fellow prisoners.<br />

3 Help the enemy identify fellow prisoners that<br />

have valuable knowledge.<br />

4 Communicate with others on behalf of the enemy.<br />

5 Provide information useful to the enemy.<br />
