16. Relationship Between the <strong>Navy</strong> Core Values and Shipboard Damage Control<br />

a. Courage--You may have to display Courage when performing<br />

emergency repairs if your ship is under attack and in danger of<br />

sinking, for example:<br />

(1) Erecting shoring.<br />

(2) Patching ruptured pipes.<br />

(3) Plugging a hole in the ship's structure.<br />

b. Commitment--Be Committed to learning information about damage<br />

control to facilitate job performance, for example:<br />

(1) Knowing the <strong>Navy</strong> system of compartment and fitting<br />

identification is essential to finding locations aboard<br />

ship.<br />

(2) Personnel must understand the material conditions of<br />

readiness and special purpose damage control<br />

classifications to know which openings can be passed<br />

through when a condition of readiness is in effect.<br />

(3) Survival of the ship and its crew may depend on personnel<br />

being able to recognize the ship's emergency alarms and<br />

taking the required actions.<br />

17. Relationship Between Teamwork and Shipboard Damage Control--<strong>The</strong> ship's<br />

crew must work as a team to:<br />

a. Maintain watertight integrity--For example, everyone must ensure<br />

that doors, hatches, and fittings are secure or open according to<br />

the material conditions of readiness and special purpose damage<br />

control classifications that are in effect.<br />

b. During casualties, effectively communicate using sound-powered<br />

telephones.<br />

c. Prevent fire.<br />

d. Perform emergency repairs to the ship.<br />
