3. Fixed CO2 Fire Extinguishing Systems<br />

a. <strong>The</strong>re are two types of fixed CO2 fire extinguishing systems<br />

installed aboard <strong>Navy</strong> ships:<br />

(1) Hose and reel<br />

(2) Total flooding<br />

b. CO2 hose and reel fire extinguishing system<br />

(1) Purpose--To extinguish class “____________” fires in main<br />

machinery spaces.<br />

(2) Components<br />

(a) Cylinders--Store liquid CO2.<br />

(b) Flexible hose--Stowed on mounted reel.<br />

(c) Horn--Directs CO2 towards the fire.<br />

c. CO2 total flooding system<br />

(1) Purpose--To extinguish large fires in spaces ____________<br />

normally occupied by personnel:<br />

(a) Flammable liquid stowage lockers<br />

(b) ____________ lockers<br />

(2) Components<br />

(a) CO2 cylinders--Store liquid CO2.<br />

(b) Alarms and indicators--Sound or illuminate to warn<br />

personnel that CO2 is being released.<br />

(c) Time delay device--Delays the flow of CO2 for<br />

_____________ seconds (non-machinery spaces) or<br />

_____________ seconds (machinery spaces) to allow<br />

personnel to escape from the space.<br />

d. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: For fixed CO2 fire extinguishing systems.<br />

(1) Immediately leave a space when the CO2 warning devices are<br />

activated.<br />

(2) Wear a SCBA when entering a space flooded by CO2.<br />
