o. Campaign in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Yugoslavia (1992-2000)<br />

(1) Overview<br />

(a) With the collapse of the Soviet Union, four republics<br />

of the communist country of Yugoslavia chose to become<br />

independent nations; i.e., Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-<br />

Herzegovina, and Macedonia.<br />

(b) Opposition by forces from the remaining portion of<br />

Yugoslavia and Bosnian Serb irregulars created a<br />

period of violence, which included the mass killing of<br />

Muslim and Croatian civilians.<br />

(2) <strong>Navy</strong> involvement<br />

(a) <strong>Navy</strong> carrier-based aircraft provided air cover for:<br />

1 U.S. cargo aircraft that transported supplies to<br />

civilians in the war-ravaged republic of Bosnia.<br />

2 United Nations peacekeepers in Bosnia-Herzegovina<br />

by enforcing a U.N. established no-fly zone<br />

against Bosnian Serb and Yugoslav aircraft.<br />

(b) In the Adriatic Sea, U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> ships established a<br />

blockade to prevent the shipment of arms to<br />

Yugoslavia.<br />

(c) U.S. Naval forces bombed enemy targets using:<br />

1 Land and carrier-based aircraft.<br />

2 Missiles launched from ships at sea.<br />

p. First women assigned to a combat ship--During March 1994, women<br />

were assigned to the crew of the aircraft carrier <strong>US</strong>S Dwight D.<br />

Eisenhower.<br />

q. Attack on <strong>US</strong>S Cole (DDG 67)<br />

(1) In October 2000, while in the port of Aden, Yemen, the <strong>US</strong>S<br />

COLE was struck by a small boat carrying two terrorists and<br />

several hundred pounds of explosives.<br />

(2) <strong>The</strong> resulting blast ripped a hole amidships on the port<br />

side killing seventeen Sailors.<br />

r. Attack on America--In September and October of 2001, the hospital<br />

ship <strong>US</strong>NS Comfort docked in Manhattan, New York to support<br />

disaster relief workers following the terrorist attack on the<br />

World Trade Center.<br />
