(2) Significant events<br />

(a) In September 1950, U.S. and other United Nations<br />

forces performed an amphibious assault on Inchon,<br />

Korea. <strong>The</strong> assault led to UN forces advancing to the<br />

Korean-Chinese border.<br />

(b) Fighting continued for almost three years with each<br />

side making advances and then retreating.<br />

(c) In July of 1953, an armistice was signed to end the<br />

fighting.<br />

l. Transitional period after the Korean War (1954-1963)<br />

(a) January 1955, <strong>US</strong>S Nautilus, the world’s first nuclearpowered<br />

submarine, began operations.<br />

(b) In September 1961, the first nuclear-powered surface<br />

attacks on South Vietnam. Hostilities evolved into a<br />

war between North and South Vietnam.<br />

(b) U.S. Naval involvement consisted mainly of:<br />

1 Gunfire support of land forces.<br />

2 Carrier operations.<br />

3 Mining harbors.<br />

4 Bombarding shore targets.<br />

5 Combating the enemy using coastal and river craft.<br />

(2) Significant events<br />

(a) In 1964, the U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> became involved in combat when<br />
